Saying Where Are You in Spanish

If you want to say, “Where are you?” in Spanish, there are three possible options: “¿Dónde estás?” (informal singular), “¿Dónde está?” (formal singular), and “¿Dónde están?” (plural).

Getting basic questions like “Where are you?” down usually is within reach for most early learners—especially if you’ve had some exposure to the basics of Spanish or already speak another Latin-based language (like Italian or French). Because these languages originated from a shared source, they have thousands of words in common, plus many grammatical similarities. Even English, though technically a Germanic language, has been heavily influenced by Latin. That’s why it’s easy to find English words like “possible” that are virtually the same in French (possible), Italian (possibile), and Spanish (posible).

Aside from the considerable overlap in vocabulary, Spanish has a particularly consistent system of pronunciation. While languages like French and English often have spelling or pronunciation rules that seem arbitrary, Spanish has only a few irregularities. The Spanish alphabet is also virtually the same as other Western European languages, with only three extra letters: ch (chay), ll (elle), and ñ (eñe).

Rosetta Stone’s Dynamic Immersion® methodology teaches you the language, not just the words. What makes it so effective is that we prepare you to use your new language in your everyday life. So, it’s not just about the features, but what you’re able to do because of them. That way, you’ll be ready to handle situations with ease and confidence.

Learn Spanish Words and Phrases

Many people choose to learn Spanish because they so often encounter the language in their everyday life. This makes good sense, considering that the Spanish language is spoken throughout the U.S., and is featured prominently in popular music, TV, movies, and restaurant fare. Other individuals make the decision to learn Spanish based on plans to volunteer, vacation, or work in any of the 20 countries around the world where Spanish is the official language. So regardless of whether you’ve decided to learn Spanish for business or pleasure, you can get off to a great start by first concentrating on learning basic Spanish words and how to pronounce them. Starting with this will help you become comfortable and understand how Spanish is used in everyday situations—by approximately 437 million Spanish speakers around the globe.

Often, new language learners get bogged down trying to memorise long lists of vocabulary. Unfortunately, this approach often leads to disappointment when they find themselves unable to comfortably understand or speak in everyday Spanish conversations. That’s why it’s advisable that you concentrate on learning to understand and accurately pronounce basic words and phrases. This practical approach to learning the Spanish language will help you to develop the confidence to participate in conversation with locals.

Of note, Spanish does have some characteristics that can make proper pronunciation of some words a bit challenging for new learners. As one example, the letter r is pronounced differently and takes some practise for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish language experts counsel new Spanish learners to practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.

Building the skills to properly pronounce Spanish requires immediate and precise feedback on your pronunciation efforts. This timely and specific feedback will allow you to make corrections to your pronunciation. From there, you can practise forming the unique sounds and speaking.

Rosetta Stone helps you get the pronunciation right in a snap with our patented TruAccent™ speech engine, which compares your voice to native and non-native speakers—in real-time—so you get the feedback you need for the most accurate pronunciation. It’s also adjustable, which allows you to tweak your accent as needed. TruAccent is a powerful tool for helping you learn and speak the Spanish language.

After you have acquired basic words, short phrases, and their proper pronunciation, you’ll be able to make the natural transition to learning longer Spanish phrases that make up much of everyday, real-world Spanish conversation. Rosetta Stone’s brief, 10-minute language lessons are designed to help you learn in precisely this way—first focusing on the basics, then teaching longer phrases, and always emphasising proper pronunciation.
