These are words we call cognates. This is why you’ll find English words like “perfume” that sound remarkably similar in French (parfum), Italian (profumo), and Spanish (perfume). In addition to the obvious similarities in vocabulary, you’ll find that Spanish also has a clear and simple system of pronunciation. Unlike French or English, there are few irregularities in either spelling or pronunciation.

Learn Spanish Words and Phrases

Learning these basics is important, because focusing solely on grammar won’t help you to understand how Spanish is used in everyday situations—by 437 million Spanish speakers around the world.

Sometimes, beginners get caught up in trying to memorise long lists of Spanish vocabulary. Unfortunately, they often find this approach does not prepare them to understand or speak in everyday Spanish conversations. As one example, the letter r is pronounced differently and takes some practise for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish language experts counsel new learners to practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.
