Spanish Class Online

Aside from the personal and professional opportunities that can come from learning to speak Spanish, having a command of the language can be a huge asset for travel or in day-to-day interactions with Spanish speakers—whether at home or abroad. Among the most widely spoken languages in the world, second only to Mandarin Chinese, Spanish has over 400 million speakers around the globe and is considered the native language for twenty different countries. While the largest population of native speakers lives throughout Central and South America, there are more than 40 million native speakers in the United States. In fact, there are more Spanish speakers in the U.S. than live in Spain.

Traditionally, learning Spanish has involved in-person classes that are tied to Spanish language workbooks. Rosetta Stone takes that experience online. Whether via smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop, you’ll be able to advance your skills in the Spanish language—including grammar and vocabulary—in a way that allows you to build confidence in everyday speaking situations.

Picking up some basics in Spanish often comes naturally for beginners, especially those who speak a related language like English, French, or Italian. Because these languages have either direct Latin roots or were heavily influenced by Latin, they each share thousands of words that are extremely similar to one another. These are words we call cognates. This is why you’ll find English words like “perfume” that sound remarkably similar in French (parfum), Italian (profumo), and Spanish (perfume). In addition to the obvious similarities in vocabulary, you’ll find that Spanish also has a clear and simple system of pronunciation. Unlike French or English, there are few irregularities in either spelling or pronunciation.

Rosetta Stone’s Dynamic Immersion® methodology teaches you the language, not just the words. What makes it so effective is that we prepare you to use your new language in everyday life. So, it’s not just about the features, but what you’re able to do because of them. That way, you’ll be ready to handle any situation with ease and confidence.

Learn Spanish Words and Phrases

Many people make the decision to learn the Spanish language because they often encounter it in their everyday life. This makes sense, considering that Spanish is spoken throughout the U.S., and is commonly featured in popular music, TV, movies, and restaurant fare. Other people decide to learn Spanish based on upcoming plans to vacation, work, or volunteer in any of the 20 countries for which Spanish is the official language. So whether your reason for choosing to learn Spanish is business or pleasure, you can get off to a strong start by first focusing on learning some common Spanish words and how to pronounce them. Learning these basics is important, because focusing solely on grammar won’t help you to understand how Spanish is used in everyday situations—by 437 million Spanish speakers around the world.

Sometimes, beginners get caught up in trying to memorise long lists of Spanish vocabulary. Unfortunately, they often find this approach does not prepare them to understand or speak in everyday Spanish conversations. That’s why language-learning experts advise that you learn to understand and accurately pronounce basic Spanish words and short phrases. This proven and practical approach to learning Spanish will allow you to develop the ability to participate in Spanish conversation with confidence.

It’s worth pointing out that Spanish does have some characteristics that can make proper pronunciation of some words a bit challenging for new learners. As one example, the letter r is pronounced differently and takes some practise for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish language experts counsel new learners to practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.

Building the skills to properly pronounce Spanish requires immediate and precise feedback on your pronunciation efforts. This timely and specific feedback will allow you to make corrections to your pronunciation. From there, you can practise forming the unique sounds and speaking.

Rosetta Stone helps you get the pronunciation right in a snap with a patented speech-recognition engine called TruAccent™, which compares your voice to native and non-native speakers—in real-time—so you get the feedback you need for the most accurate pronunciation. It’s also adjustable, which allows you to tweak your accent as needed. TruAccent is a powerful tool for helping you learn and speak the Spanish language.

Once you have learned basic Spanish words, short phrases, and their pronunciation, you’ll be ready to move onto learning longer Spanish phrases that make up much of everyday conversation. Rosetta Stone’s brief and easily digested, 10-minute Spanish lessons are designed to help you complete the journey—focusing first on basic words and short phrases, then teaching longer phrases, and emphasising accurate pronunciation. Rosetta Stone language lessons will help you learn to understand and speak in Spanish with confidence.
