How to Say Money in Spanish

If you want to say the word for “money” in Spanish, you would generally say “dinero” or “el dinero.” However, a fairly common slang term for money is “plata.” And you can easily find a few dozen other terms across the Spanish-speaking world.

While some Spanish words, like “dinero,” have many slang variations, most are actually quite close to words used in other Western European languages like English, French, and Italian. When languages come from––or are influenced by––a shared root language, they tend to have many words that are closely related to one another (cognates) or have obvious similarities. That’s why you can easily find English words like “minute” that sound remarkably similar in French (minute), Italian (minuto), and Spanish (minuto).

In addition to various crossovers in spelling and vocabulary, you’re going to find that Spanish also has an almost perfectly clear system of pronunciation, with few of the irregularities you find in English. Plus, the Spanish alphabet is also a close match to the English one. There are just three more letters you need to remember: ch (chay), ll (elle), and ñ (eñe).

Using Rosetta Stone’s approach, you’ll learn the language, not just the words. What makes the program so effective is that we prepare you to use your new language in your everyday life. So it’s not just about the features, but what you’re able to do because of them. That way, you’ll be ready to handle situations with ease and confidence.

Learning and Pronouncing Spanish Words

Some people embark on learning Spanish because they’ve found that they frequently encounter the language in their everyday lives. Spanish is so very often heard in popular music, movies, and TV shows. After all, there are an estimated 437 million Spanish speakers around the world. Other people decide to learn Spanish because they have plans to vacation, volunteer, or do business in any one of the 20 countries around the world where Spanish is the official language. So whether your reasons are for business or pleasure, you can get off to an accelerated start by first focusing on learning the very basic Spanish words and how to pronounce them.

Some new learners get caught up trying to memorise long lists of Spanish vocabulary words and phrases. This tedious and time-consuming effort can result in the unfortunate outcome of having no ability to understand or be understood in everyday Spanish conversation. That’s why it’s so very important that you learn to understand and properly pronounce basic words and phrases used in everyday Spanish conversation. This smart approach will lead you to becoming confident and comfortable conversing in Spanish with locals.

It’s important to note that Spanish does have some pronunciation distinctions that can make it a challenge for language learners. As one example, the letter r is pronounced differently and takes some practise for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish language experts suggest new Spanish learners practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.

Refining your Spanish pronunciation will require that you receive immediate and accurate feedback on your spoken efforts. This feedback will allow you to make any needed corrections to your pronunciation right away. Then once you’re able to pronounce accurately, you’ll want to practise until you can readily shape the sounds of the spoken Spanish language.

Rosetta Stone helps you get the pronunciation just right in a snap with TruAccent. Our patented speech engine instantly compares your voice to native and non-native speakers, so you get real-time feedback for the most accurate pronunciation. It’s also adjustable, which allows you to fine-tune your accent. TruAccent is among the most powerful tools for helping you learn and speak the Spanish language.

After new language learners have acquired the skills to understand and pronounce basic Spanish words and short phrases, they will be ready to transition into learning longer Spanish phrases that make up much of everyday Spanish conversation. Rosetta Stone’s brief, 10-minute language lessons are built to do just that––first learn the Spanish basics, then move on to longer Spanish phrases. Before you know it, you’ll be speaking Spanish with confidence.
