How Are You Today in Spanish

If you want to say “how are you today” in Spanish, you would simply say, “¿Cómo está hoy?” It’s the formal version of the greeting. The informal/familiar version is “¿Cómo estás hoy?”. Speaking to more than one person? Then use “¿Cómo estáis hoy?” as the plural informal/familiar version or “¿Cómo están hoy?” as the more formal version of the plural.

Picking up some basics in Spanish is relatively easy for beginners, especially those who speak a language like English, French, or Italian. Languages of the same family often share words that are cognates or have similarities because they are derived from the same mother tongue. This is why you’ll find English words like “red” that sound remarkably similar in French (rouge), Italian (rosso), and Spanish (rojo). In addition to familiar-sounding vocabulary, you’ll discover Spanish also has a straightforward system of pronunciation, fewer irregularities than many other languages, and an alphabet similar to the English one. There are just three additional letters you’ll need to master: ch (chay), ll (elle), and ñ (eñe).

With Rosetta Stone’s immersive approach, you’ll learn the language, not just the words. What makes Rosetta Stone effective is that we prepare you to use your new language in your everyday life. So it’s not just about the features, but what you’re able to do because of them. That way, you’ll be ready to handle any situation with ease and confidence.

How to Learn Spanish

Many choose to learn Spanish after encountering the language so often in their day-to-day life. After all, Spanish is featured prominently in much of today’s most popular music and foods. Others learn Spanish because they are going to travel to or to work in one of the 20 countries around the world where Spanish is the official language. Whether it’s for vacation, curiosity, or necessity, you can hit the ground running in the Spanish language by familiarizing yourself with some of these basic Spanish words and phrases. Learning Spanish words and phrases is important, as the grammar alone won’t teach you how the language is used by the 437 million Spanish speakers worldwide.

Focusing on pronunciation rather than vocabulary acquisition is the key to learning to speak Spanish with confidence. Often, language learners may get distracted trying to master long lists of phrases or flashcard decks full of words, but find themselves unable to understand or be understood in actual conversations. That’s why learning to pronounce and understand commonly used phrases in Spanish will go a long way towards helping you feel more comfortable engaging with locals.

It’s important to note that Spanish does have some pronunciation distinctions that can make it a challenge for language learners. As one example, the letter r is pronounced differently and takes some practise for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish language experts suggest new Spanish learners practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.

Honing your pronunciation means getting feedback and making corrections, practising, and persisting until your mouth can get a feel for how to shape the sounds that make up the Spanish language. Rosetta Stone embeds our patented speech-recognition engine, called TruAccent, into each and every lesson to provide instant feedback that helps you align your accent with that of native speakers. Developed by scanning and integrating the speech of Spanish speakers, TruAccent can be a powerful tool in helping you learn to understand and be understood in Spanish.

Once beginners have learned the Spanish basics that make up the building blocks of speaking the language, it’s natural to transition to the longer phrases that are the backbone of conversations. Rosetta Stone’s 10-minute lessons are built in exactly this way, scaling naturally towards speaking confidently by always structuring vocabulary acquisition in context with real-world situations. To broaden your Spanish from beginner to intermediate language learning, it helps to focus on some tactics that can accelerate your understanding of Spanish.
