Do You Have in Spanish?

If you want to say “do you have” in Spanish, you would say “tienes” (singular informal), “tiena”(singular formal), or “tienen” (plural).

Getting a firm grip on the ins-and-out of “do you have” and other verbs or expressions in Spanish can certainly seem intimidating, but they can be simple to learn—especially if you happen to speak related languages like Italian and French—or even English. Italian and French are quite closely related to Spanish, all coming directly from Latin—whereas the English language makes use of many French and Latin or Italian words and phrases that are cognates (essentially lingual cousins of one another). That’s why you’ll start to notice that there are a great number of English terms like the word “automatic” that sound close in French (automatique), Italian (automatico/automatica), and Spanish (automático/automática). The majority of Spanish students tend to find that the language has an easily understood pronunciation system, with few irregularities in pronunciation. Fortunately, this is unlike the English language (known to be among the most difficult to master). Better yet, the Spanish alphabet is closely matched to English and the majority of other major western European languages. There are only three additional letters you’ll need to learn in Spanish: ch (chay), and ll (elle), and ñ (eñe).

With Rosetta Stone’s immersive approach, you’ll learn the language, not just the words.

What makes Rosetta Stone unique is that we prepare you to use your new language in the real world.

Start to Understand Spanish

As a new Spanish language learner, your best bet is to first focus on learning the building blocks that come into play in common, everyday conversation. Learning key words and phrases like who, what, when, where, why, yes, no and please will go a long way in easing your entrance into everyday Spanish conversation. Here’s a list of some of those Spanish language building block words and phrases:

Hola / Hello
Adiós / Goodbye
Me gusta / I like
No me gusta / I don’t like
/ Yes
No / No
Por favor/ Please
Gracias / Thank You
Lo siento / Sorry
Salud / Bless you
¿Quién? / Who?
¿Qué? / What?
¿Por qué? / Why?
¿Dónde? / Where?

As you may have noticed—Spanish does have a few crucial differences in pronunciation that can make it a bit of a challenge for some learners, at least early on. One example is found with the letter r which is pronounced differently and takes some practise for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish language experts counsel new Spanish learners to practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.

To accurately develop your Spanish pronunciation skills requires real-time feedback on your efforts. Immediate feedback allows you to make on-the-spot corrections. Then once you’ve got the pronunciations correct, you’ll need to practise until you can easily form the sounds that make up the Spanish language. Rosetta Stone’s patented speech-recognition engine—called TruAccent—is integrated into every language lesson. TruAccent gives you the real-time feedback on your pronunciation you need. It compares your voice to the voices of native and non-native Spanish speakers, and then provides precise and instant feedback on your pronunciation. What’s more, TruAccent is adjustable so you can fine-tune your accent. The speech-recognition engine was developed by carefully analyzing and processing the natural speech of Spanish speakers. That’s why it’s among the most powerful tools anywhere that can help you become a confident and capable Spanish speaker.

After you’ve mastered the basics of the Spanish language, you’ll want to move on to learning the longer phrases that make up the backbone of everyday conversations. Rosetta Stone’s brief, digestible and focused lessons are all built to guide you on this path. Rosetta Stone language lessons lead you to the ability to speak and converse in Spanish with confidence in everyday life. Rosetta Stone provides you with the learning strategies, tools and tactics that will help you speak and understand the Spanish language.
