How to Say Dinner in Spanish

If you want to say “dinner” in Spanish, the most dependable option is “la cena.” It refers to the evening meal, while, “el almuerzo” designates lunch, or an afternoon meal. Of course, there are occasions when you’ll want to refer to having a meal together at an unspecified time. In that case, you would use “la comida.” Here are some examples:

Trata de tomar la cena al menos dos horas antes de acostarte. / Try to eat dinner at least two hours before bed.
Hemos invitado a la familia entera para el almuerzo del domingo. / We’re having the whole family over for lunch on Sunday.
Vamos a hacer una comida en el parque para celebrar nuestro aniversario. / We’re going to organise a dinner in the park for our anniversary.

As complicated as Spanish can be at the start, remember that you don’t have to tackle all the options at once. Even with something like “dinner,” getting a handle on the most basic “la cena” is going to work pretty well in most circumstances. Some Spanish-language experts suggest new learners practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.
