How to Say Dinner in Spanish

If you want to say “dinner” in Spanish, the most dependable option is “la cena.” It refers to the evening meal, while, “el almuerzo” designates lunch, or an afternoon meal. Of course, there are occasions when you’ll want to refer to having a meal together at an unspecified time. In that case, you would use “la comida.” Here are some examples:

Trata de tomar la cena al menos dos horas antes de acostarte. / Try to eat dinner at least two hours before bed.
Hemos invitado a la familia entera para el almuerzo del domingo. / We’re having the whole family over for lunch on Sunday.
Vamos a hacer una comida en el parque para celebrar nuestro aniversario. / We’re going to organise a dinner in the park for our anniversary.

As complicated as Spanish can be at the start, remember that you don’t have to tackle all the options at once. Even with something like “dinner,” getting a handle on the most basic “la cena” is going to work pretty well in most circumstances. As you progress on your learning journey, you can slowly incorporate other words with more nuanced meanings.

Learn Spanish Words and Phrases

Many people want to learn Spanish because they frequently encounter the language in their everyday lives. After all, Spanish pops up in popular music, movies, and TV shows. Other people choose to learn Spanish because of plans to work, vacation, or volunteer in any of the 20 countries around the world where Spanish is the official language. Whatever your reason for deciding to learn Spanish, you can get off to a great start by first learning how to pronounce some very basic Spanish words and phrases. It is an important step to understand and be understood by any of the 437 million people around the world who speak Spanish.

Some beginning learners get sidetracked trying to memorise lengthy lists of Spanish vocabulary words and phrases. This tedious and time-consuming effort can lead to the undesired outcome of having minimal ability to participate in real-world Spanish conversations. That’s why it’s strongly advised that new Spanish language learners focus on understanding and pronouncing basic words and phrases first. This smart and practical approach to learning Spanish will help you become a confident and comfortable Spanish speaker.

Of note, Spanish does have some pronunciation distinctions that can make it a challenge for language-learners. As one example, the letter r is pronounced differently and takes some practise for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish-language experts suggest new learners practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.
