Confident in Spanish

If you want to say “confident” in Spanish, you may use “confiado” (masculine singular), “seguro” (masculine singular), or other forms thereof—making sure to modify for both gender and the number of people or objects to whom you’re referring.

When languages come from the same root or language family, they often share many words that are directly related to one another (cognates) or have a high degree of similarity, because they are directly linked to the same earlier language. That is why you’ll find English words like “celebration” that sound remarkably similar in French (célébration), Italian (celebrazione), and Spanish (celebracion). In addition to familiar-sounding vocab and spelling, you’ll likely notice Spanish also has an almost perfectly clear system of pronunciation, with few irregularities. The Spanish alphabet is also an extremely close match to English. Aside from the 26 letters you already know and use, there are just 3 more you’ll need to learn and remember: ch (chay), ll (elle), and ñ (eñe).

With Rosetta Stone’s immersive approach, you’ll learn the language, not just the words. What makes Rosetta Stone effective is that we prepare you to use your new language in your real world. So it’s not just about the features, but what you’re able to do because of them. That way, you’ll be ready to handle any situation with ease and confidence.

Learning and Pronouncing Spanish Words

Many individuals decide to learn Spanish because they so often encounter the Spanish language in their everyday life. Spanish is prominently featured in our popular music, our restaurant fare and in many other aspects of our everyday culture. Other people decide to learn Spanish because they have plans to travel to or do business in one of the 20 countries around the world for which Spanish is the official language. So whether you want to acquire Spanish language skills for your everyday life here at home, or for an upcoming vacation or because you need it for work, you will get off to a great start by familiarizing yourself with some basic Spanish words and phrases. Learning common Spanish words and phrases is very important—because learning grammar alone will not give you the skills to understand how the Spanish language is used by the approximately 437 million Spanish speakers around the world.

The key to effectively learning Spanish is to concentrate on pronunciation and not on simple vocabulary acquisition. This proven approach will put you on the path to learning to speak Spanish comfortably and with confidence. It’s all too common for new language learners to get caught up in trying to memorise long lists of phrases or get through flashcard decks full of words. As a result of simply memorising words, many new language learners end up without the ability to understand or be understood in real-life Spanish conversations. To avoid this unfortunate outcome, it’s critical that you learn to pronounce and understand commonly used phrases in the Spanish language. This effective approach will lead to the confidence to engage in Spanish conversation with locals.

As you may have noticed—Spanish does have a few crucial differences in pronunciation that can make it a bit of a challenge for some learners, at least early on. One example is found with the letter r which is pronounced differently and takes some practise for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish language experts counsel new Spanish learners to practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.

Your success in developing accurate Spanish pronunciation depends on getting immediate and accurate feedback on your pronunciation. Based on real-time feedback, you’ll be able to make pronunciation corrections, and then practise until you get used to naturally shaping the distinct sounds of Spanish language pronunciation. Rosetta Stone integrates TruAccent, a proven and patented speech-recognition engine, into every language learning lesson. It offers immediate feedback to help you align your Spanish accent with the accent of native Spanish speakers. TruAccent was expertly developed by carefully scanning and integrating the speech of native and non-native Spanish speakers and can be very effective in helping you quickly learn to understand and be understood in Spanish.

Once you have learned the basics that are the building blocks of speaking Spanish, it will be a natural transition to the longer phrases that are the backbone of Spanish conversations. Rosetta Stone’s 10-minute lessons are built in just this way, leading to your ability to speak comfortably and confidently in context with real-life situations.
