If you want to say “confident” in Spanish, you may use “confiado” (masculine singular), “seguro” (masculine singular), or other forms thereof—making sure to modify for both gender and the number of people or objects to whom you’re referring.

When languages come from the same root or language family, they often share many words that are directly related to one another (cognates) or have a high degree of similarity, because they are directly linked to the same earlier language. That is why you’ll find English words like “celebration” that sound remarkably similar in French (célébration), Italian (celebrazione), and Spanish (celebracion). The Spanish alphabet is also an extremely close match to English. Aside from the 26 letters you already know and use, there are just 3 more you’ll need to learn and remember: ch (chay), ll (elle), and ñ (eñe).

This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish language experts counsel new Spanish learners to practise making the “tt” sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.
