Common Spanish Verbs

Learning the definitions and how to conjugate common verbs is a critical part of understanding the language. But, because of the sheer quantity of conjugations as compared to English, the Spanish verb system is often one of the most difficult parts of the language to master.

The top 12 most common Spanish verbs you’ll want to learn are:

Estar / To be

Ser / To be

Tener / To have

Haber / To have (auxiliary verb)

Hacer / To do or make

Ir / To go

Venir / To come

Decir / To say or tell

Poder / To be able

Dar / To give

Ver / To see

Poder / To know

The designation of “regular” simply means that all verbs are conjugated in the same manner.

They are broken into three groups; -ar, -er, and -ir. So simply put, you can conjugate any regular verbs using the same endings:

-ar = o, as, a, amos, áis, an

-er = o, es, e, emos, éis, en

-ir = o, es, e, imos, ís, en

Once you’re comfortable with the regular verbs, you can dive into the stem changing and irregular verbs. But remember, you don’t have to tackle them all at once. Understanding how to conjugate the most commonly used regular verbs will give you a huge jump start towards having conversations in Spanish.
